MediaTek Financing Plan Tests AI Cloud ASIC Ambitions
MediaTek is lining up $5 billion in financing for AI datacenter ASICs, but The Register reported that analysts doubt a quick move from below 1% accelerator share toward the company's 15% to 20% ambition.

MediaTek's $5 billion financing plan puts a new supplier into the AI datacenter custom-chip race, but the gap between a small accelerator base and a double-digit share target remains wide.
The Register reported that the Taiwanese chipmaker wants to use the funding to move beyond its smartphone, Chromebook and Wi-Fi silicon base into AI chips and systems for cloud customers.
The company is pursuing custom ASICs rather than general-purpose GPUs.
MediaTek says that approach could win 15% to 20% share in an AI datacenter silicon market it sizes at as much as $80 billion next year, and its board approved the financing to secure supply-chain capacity for chips, systems and platforms.
Cloud Demand Drives The ASIC Bet
Chief executive Dr Rick Tsai linked the plan to frontier models and agentic AI during MediaTek's Q2 2026 earnings call.
Tsai said systems that plan, reason, execute and self-correct are increasing compute demand across cloud and edge AI, creating a market opening for silicon pitched on total cost of ownership and performance per watt.
According to MediaTek, its initial AI ASIC family was built with large US cloud provider customers and is planned for fourth-quarter production this year.
The company also links a second accelerator design to a 2028 high-volume production target, contingent on yield and reliability work with an advanced packaging partner.
Revenue expectations depend on that ramp.
Tsai's earnings-call comments put 2026 AI datacenter ASIC revenue above $2 billion, followed by a larger increase next year if customer demand converts into volume orders.
Incumbents Set The Competitive Bar
Broadcom and Marvell already supply AI ASIC designs, and Google has moved toward offering its tensor processing units to selected customers.
Bloomberg Intelligence, in a January forecast , projected AI ASICs growing at a 27% compound annual rate to $118 billion by 2033, with the segment rising from 8% of AI accelerators in 2024 to 19% in 2033.
The datacenter push would also give MediaTek a higher-growth line as its core results slow.
The company reported Q2 revenue of NT$152.18 billion, or $4.68 billion, up 1.2% year on year, while operating income fell 22% to NT$22.87 billion, or $705 million.
Gartner VP analyst Gaurav Gupta challenged the scale of the target, telling The Register that the chipmaker held less than 1% of the 2024 AI accelerator market in compute electronics.
Gartner still projects a sub-1% position for the company despite recent custom-accelerator traction with customers such as Google.
The financing plan still needs cloud customer commitments, packaging reliability and production volume before it can become a material datacenter business rather than a market-share ambition.
