HSBC Uses Marketnode For Tokenized Dollar Notes In Hong Kong
HSBC completed a live blockchain-native issuance of tokenized U.S. dollar structured notes in Hong Kong, with Marketnode acting as tokenization and digital paying agent. The public record leaves note size, investor name, pricing, settlement-speed data and cost savings outside the public record.

HSBC Issues Tokenized Dollar Notes in Hong Kong
HSBC has completed its first blockchain-native issuance of tokenized U.S. dollar structured notes in Hong Kong through a private placement for institutional investors.
The transaction moves the bank’s use of blockchain beyond pilot experimentation toward an operational market-infrastructure application, with Marketnode handling both tokenization and digital payment operations.
The notes were issued directly on blockchain, while Marketnode managed payment processes between HSBC and the investor.
Its dual role as tokenization agent and digital paying agent gave the transaction an end-to-end blockchain-native structure without relying solely on legacy intermediaries.
HSBC said the pilot was designed to assess whether tokenization can improve the efficiency of structured-product operations, including issuance, settlement, administration and ongoing servicing.
The bank has described the effort as an integration of blockchain infrastructure into institutional financial services rather than a replacement for existing market systems.
One Workflow From Issuance to Servicing
Suvir Loomba, HSBC’s regional head of securities services for Asia and a Marketnode board member, said the transaction demonstrates how tokenization can streamline different stages of a structured product’s lifecycle, from initial issuance and settlement to post-trade services.
Patrick Boumalham, HSBC’s head of institutional sales for Asia, said tokenization could provide a more scalable foundation for future financial-product innovation by improving efficiency across capital-market processes.
The transaction therefore tested more than the initial sale of the notes.
Its structure also covered payment management and the later administrative work associated with a structured product, giving Marketnode an operating role alongside the technology used to record the issuance.
Hong Kong Builds the Regulatory Framework
The issuance comes as Hong Kong expands its support for tokenized financial markets.
In June, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority established a tokenized-bond expert group after the government issued more than HK$6.8 billion ($868 million) in tokenized bonds through multiple offerings.
The group includes HSBC, JPMorgan Securities, Standard Chartered, UBS, Ant Digital and HashKey Group.
Its work focuses on the legal frameworks, market standards and infrastructure requirements needed to support the growth of tokenized bond markets.
HSBC also became one of the first institutions to receive a stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in April under the city’s new regulatory framework.
Other licensed participants include Anchorpoint Financial, backed by Standard Chartered.
For tokenized structured products to gain wider institutional use, they will need to demonstrate measurable operational advantages over existing systems while meeting regulatory, compliance and operational requirements.
