A U.S.-chartered dollar-clearing pitch is moving from startup plan to capital-backed buildout at Augustus, after the company announced a $180 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation.

The company announcement names Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa as the regions it plans to keep serving with the new capital.

The funding pairs a regulated-bank approval with a product push around dollar accounts and payment rails.

The Global Dollar Bank strategy is built around direct access to those rails through a federally chartered bank, rather than through layers of correspondent banks and middleware providers.

Series B Funding Follows OCC Approval

Tiger Global led the Series B, with participation from Hummingbird, QED and founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel, according to the Augustus announcement.

The round comes after the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave Augustus conditional approval in May for a U.S. national bank charter, according to the company announcement.

The release frames that approval as a route to federally regulated banking infrastructure built from the ground up.

It connects the charter to a cross-border payments problem: international fintechs and banks often need dollar access, while traditional correspondent banking can add intermediaries, delays and technology limits.

The earlier Ivy business raised $20 million in an August 2023 Series A for open-banking payment-network expansion, according to the same company release.

The new valuation and bank-charter strategy move the business from open-banking network expansion toward direct dollar clearing.

Platform Combines Bank Accounts, Rails And Stablecoins

According to the Augustus announcement, the company's API-first platform supports operating and FBO accounts with named virtual accounts.

The Augustus announcement also lists Swift, ACH, SEPA and stablecoins as rails for customer and third-party transactions.

The announcement names Marble as the proprietary core banking platform that will continue receiving investment.

Augustus describes Marble as using AI across the bank's back office to support faster settlement times and 24/7/365 availability, but the release does not include customer-level settlement data or audited operating metrics.

For banks and fintechs in the named regions, the product pitch is not only stablecoin access.

It is a company claim that dollar accounts, bank rails and programmable account infrastructure can sit behind one federally chartered provider.

Investors Back A Clearing-Bank Model

CEO and co-founder Ferdinand Dabitz linked the financing to Augustus' mission to provide dollar access to international fintechs and banks.

Greg Quarles, the company's president, described the model as proprietary technology fused with the capabilities of a federally chartered bank.

QED managing partner Nigel Morris put the investor case against correspondent banking, arguing that global fintechs and banks have been left with slow incumbent banks or middleware fintech providers.

The model is meant to combine technology with a bank charter rather than sit on top of legacy correspondent rails.

The announcement leaves commercial uptake still to be proven because it does not name bank customers or transaction volumes for the dollar-clearing platform.
