Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 Targets Face ID Restarts on iPhone 18 Pro
Apple’s first iOS 27 update fixes an iPhone 18 Pro Face ID restart bug, a Pro camera artifact issue and a broader screen-unresponsive glitch across iPhones running iOS 27.

Apple has pushed out iOS 27.0.1 to address a restart problem affecting its newest Pro iPhones, ZDNet reported, making the first iOS 27 update a targeted bug-fix release rather than a security patch cycle.
The most visible fix is aimed at the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The affected phones could freeze or restart without warning when Face ID failed to authenticate, particularly after a user tried again inside an app or protected feature.
That made a routine sign-in flow the trigger for a device-level interruption.
ZDNet’s account describes the issue appearing during app authentication, with one case freezing for several seconds and another forcing a full restart.
The update is meant to remove that failure path for owners of the two Pro models.
iOS 27.0.1 also closes a camera-related bug on the same Pro devices.
Apple’s release notes say a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max phones could show a color artifact in photos taken at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48.
A third fix is broader.
Apple says opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time may cause the screen to become unresponsive, so the update is available to every iPhone already running iOS 27 rather than only to the latest Pro hardware.
The software can be installed through Settings, General and Software Update.
Apple’s supported-device note lists iPhone 11 and later, along with recent iPad Pro, iPad Air, standard iPad and iPad mini generations for the related platform updates.
Apple also released 27.0.1 updates for iPadOS, macOS and VisionOS.
Those updates were described only as bug-fix releases, with no specific defect named for those platforms.
Apple’s security release page did not list security patches for the latest updates, reinforcing that this round is focused on operating stability.
The Face ID issue appears tied to newer hardware behavior.
9to5Mac research cited by ZDNet found the restart could happen after a failed Face ID attempt in Passwords, private Safari tabs and other apps locked behind facial recognition, when the user tapped “Try Face ID Again.”
The article points to a possible placement difference in the iPhone 18 Pro line.
Older models such as the iPhone 17 and 16 place the Face ID camera in the Dynamic Island, while the new Pro phones move the camera under the display to the left of that area.
The iPhone fix follows another early-cycle Apple patch.
WatchOS 27.0.1 was released the previous week to address random restarts on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, after at least one diagnostic log pointed to timeouts involving the watch’s Neural Engine.
For Apple users, the immediate consequence is straightforward: iOS 27.0.1 is a maintenance update designed to stop specific freezes, restarts and display glitches before they become a larger reliability concern across the new operating-system cycle.
