OpenAI Enterprise Revenue Overtakes Consumer Business Ahead Of Target
CNBC reported that OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told investors enterprise revenue has passed the ChatGPT-led consumer business as the company reaches a $40 billion annualized run rate.

OpenAI's enterprise business has overtaken its ChatGPT-led consumer revenue sooner than the company previously projected, CNBC reported, shifting the company's investor story from viral consumer adoption toward corporate AI spending discipline.
The update came from Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar during a Friday investor meeting that followed a week of executive turnover.
OpenAI had entered the year with revenue split 60-40 between consumer and enterprise, but Friar told attendees the enterprise side accelerated faster than expected and now represents the majority of revenue.
$40 Billion Run Rate Changes The Mix
OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate has reached $40 billion.
July run rate increased 20% from the prior month, while business customers grew faster at 32%, based on slides viewed by CNBC.
Those numbers place the company ahead of a target Friar had discussed earlier in the year, when consumer and enterprise revenue were expected to reach parity by the end of 2026.
The new mix matters because enterprise adoption usually depends on procurement controls, security review, workflow integration and measurable productivity gains rather than individual user enthusiasm.
For customers, that makes model economics part of the buying decision.
Friar said companies have moved away from allowing employees to consume large amounts of AI without enough output, and are now focused on cost per unit of intelligence.
The framing links OpenAI's growth to whether customers can convert model use into repeatable work results.
Executive Turnover Frames The Investor Meeting
The investor update took place after revenue chief Denise Dresser left the company eight months into the role.
Longtime OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap also announced his departure earlier in the week after eight years at the ChatGPT maker.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman joined the meeting and thanked Dresser for building the enterprise foundation.
Dali Rajic, previously operating chief at cybersecurity company Wiz, is replacing her in the revenue role, adding another enterprise-software operator to OpenAI's commercial leadership.
The turnover gives investors a governance and execution question at the same time revenue is accelerating.
A company preparing for public-market scrutiny needs sales leadership, customer retention and infrastructure spending to remain aligned while demand grows.
Open Source And Security Stay In Focus
Executives fielded questions about Chinese open-source models and the timing of an initial public offering.
Brockman downplayed the competitive threat from open source and treated cybersecurity as a critical part of the business.
That emphasis fits the enterprise shift.
Corporate buyers need controls over data access, model behavior, application integration and incident response before AI systems can move deeper into core operations.
Pricing alone will not determine whether OpenAI can defend accounts if buyers compare closed frontier models with open alternatives they can host or tune themselves.
Friar also highlighted model efficiency, including a newest model described as 54% more efficient on agentic coding tasks, along with recent price reductions across the model suite.
Advertising is approaching a $1 billion run rate after OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in February.
The investor message now rests on a narrower test than user growth alone: enterprise customers must keep expanding paid deployment while OpenAI stabilizes commercial leadership and proves that efficiency gains can offset the cost of running frontier models.
