Microsoft And 3M Extend Azure AI Data Centre Partnership Around EBO

Microsoft plans to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical technology in Azure data centres as the companies extend a partnership that also puts Microsoft AI tools inside 3M's enterprise workflows, Capacity reported.

The agreement connects two different AI bottlenecks.

One is physical infrastructure: Azure data centres need fibre links that can be installed and maintained in dense, high-volume environments.

The other is enterprise adoption: 3M plans to use Microsoft AI and digital platforms across customer service, finance, sales and marketing.

Azure Data Centres Get 3M EBO Connectors

Azure cloud and AI infrastructure is expected to become the first announced hyperscale cloud platform to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical technology.

3M says the technology is designed to make fibre connections faster to install and easier to maintain in Azure data centres.

Microsoft said the EBO design should reduce the need for frequent cleaning and inspection while supporting reliable optical performance in dense deployment environments.

The announcement described potential reductions in network deployment timelines in some environments, but it did not publish measured timing data.

Cliff Henson, Microsoft's corporate vice president for cloud supply chain and engineering, said 3M's EBO solution would support performance, reliability and efficiency for cloud and AI workloads.

His statement framed Microsoft's data-centre buildout as a combination of internal infrastructure design and partner technology from 3M.

3M has been scaling EBO production in recent years for data-centre operators facing AI infrastructure demand.

The company has advanced the technology for high-volume data-centre applications so it can be adopted across a wider ecosystem.

3M Adds Microsoft AI To Internal Workflows

The partnership also covers 3M's own enterprise transformation plan.

The announcement listed an AI-agent workflow for credit checks, delinquency assessments and system updates, with human-in-the-loop controls and a custom monitoring dashboard for real-time visibility and approvals.

The companies expect the workflow to reduce manual effort, free 3M staff for higher-value work, improve process speed and support cash-flow management.

Measured deployment results, savings figures and adoption timelines for the workflow remain outside the public announcement.

3M also plans to deploy Microsoft AI and digital capabilities in customer service, finance, sales and marketing.
