Hong Kong Gold Exchange Puts Alibaba Cloud Behind Settlement Platform
South China Morning Post reported that Hong Kong Gold Exchange and TGX Technology launched HKGXTS to build a gold trading, clearing and settlement platform, with pilot operations expected in the first quarter of 2027.

Hong Kong's plan to modernise bullion market plumbing moved into execution with a new exchange technology venture, South China Morning Post reported, putting cloud, trading-system and tokenisation work behind the city's gold-hub push.
The Hong Kong Gold Exchange and TGX Technology launched Hong Kong Gold Exchange Trading System, or HKGXTS, to build a gold trading, clearing and settlement platform.
The system is expected to begin pilot operations in the first quarter of 2027.
Alibaba Cloud Backs The Settlement Build
Alibaba Cloud's role gives the venture a cloud provider tied to TGX Technology, while Hundsun Technologies adds capital-markets systems experience.
The platform is designed to combine existing exchange products, trading, settlement and clearing services into one system before later digital offerings are added.
Gold-market infrastructure depends on more than venue branding.
Clearing, settlement and delivery capability determine whether institutional users can treat a trading hub as operationally reliable rather than only as a listing or pricing channel.
Physical Delivery Anchors The First Phase
The first phase is built around physical gold delivery capabilities and the exchange's current product base.
Later functions are expected to include support for gold tokenisation, which would connect bullion-market workflows with digital asset infrastructure once the core settlement layer is operating.
Physical delivery therefore remains in the first release, while tokenisation is reserved for a later phase.
The pilot will test the linked operating functions before any tokenised product enters the platform's scope.
HKGXTS chairman Haywood Cheung, who also chairs HKGX, called the establishment an important step in strengthening Hong Kong's gold trading infrastructure.
HKGXTS chief executive Sun Ho framed the system as a layered bullion market venue anchored in physical delivery rather than a digital-only product.
HKGXTS now has a joint-venture structure, named technology partners and a 2027 pilot window.
The trial covers the operating core—trading, clearing, settlement and physical delivery—before the tokenisation phase begins.
