Bitcoin Leverage Builds As Open Interest Adds $2.3 Billion
Bitcoin open interest rose by about 27,000 BTC as funding rates climbed from 3% to 10%, showing traders paying more to hold bullish exposure.

CoinDesk reported that bitcoin derivatives traders added about 27,000 BTC in open interest as the token moved above $86,000, a $2.3 billion build-up that points to heavier leveraged positioning before the latest US jobs data.
The increase lifted outstanding futures and perpetual contracts to roughly 653,000 BTC, or $56.2 billion, from 626,000 BTC on Sept. 30.
Open interest tracks contracts that have not been closed or settled, so the change shows fresh exposure entering the market rather than a simple transfer between existing positions.
Bitcoin’s spot move gave the positioning a clearer direction.
The token rose from about $83,500 to $86,500 over the same period, meaning the increase in contracts came alongside a price advance rather than during a sell-off or flat market.
That combination often leaves traders watching whether new leverage is reinforcing momentum or making the move more fragile.
Perpetual funding rates supplied the clearest bullish signal.
The rate climbed from around 3% to 10%, raising the cost paid by traders holding long positions to those on the short side.
Positive funding does not prove that the market will keep rising, but a jump of that size shows that traders are willing to pay more to keep upside exposure open.
The positioning still comes from a low base.
Open interest of about 625,000 BTC at the end of September was close to its lowest level in 12 months, so the latest expansion marks a recovery in speculative activity rather than an extreme by itself.
The risk is that higher funding can make crowded long positions more vulnerable if price momentum reverses quickly.
Crypto-linked equities also moved higher in premarket trading.
Strategy and Strive were each up around 3%, while Coinbase and Robinhood gained about 2%, reflecting the broader market response to stronger bitcoin pricing and higher derivatives activity.
For the next move, the funding rate is the operative condition.
If it remains elevated while open interest keeps expanding, bullish leverage will be carrying a larger share of bitcoin’s advance; if it falls or reverses after the jobs report, the rally will have less derivatives support than the headline price move suggests.
