Discovery Bank Claims 500% AI ROI as Most Enterprises Face Longer Payback
PYMNTS reports that Discovery Bank says its behavioral AI system produced more than 500% ROI while fraud, credit and service workflows run on the same operating layer.

Discovery Bank is claiming a faster AI payback than the timetable most large enterprises still expect, with a behavioral banking system producing more than 500% return on investment, PYMNTS reported, in a case that turns model deployment into a measurable banking operations story.
The Discovery Limited-owned lender uses the system to combine spending, savings, credit and rewards signals before choosing the next customer prompt.
The output can be an offer, reminder or financial tip tailored to the customer instead of a generic campaign sent across the customer base.
A Databricks case study tied the return figure to faster data and model work.
The vendor-published case study says pipeline development now runs 20 times faster, data-product teams build five times faster and daily model generation can exceed 300.
The vendor-published Databricks case study also reports a 40% lift in client engagement impact from the bank’s next-best-action model.
The return figure also appears in a Microsoft customer story built around Discovery Bank’s use of an Azure OpenAI-powered assistant and the Databricks platform.
Stuart Emslie, the bank’s head of actuarial and data science, connected the 500% ROI number to that combined stack, giving the claim a named internal owner rather than leaving it as a vendor-only performance statement.
The lender has extended the system beyond personalization.
Fraud detection, credit decisions and customer service run on the same AI base, replacing a set of separate tools with one operating layer for several high-volume bank functions.
A May 14 company release estimated that the system had prevented 100 million rand, or about $6 million, in potential fraud losses since late 2025 and put full first-contact resolution at about 55% of client queries.
Discovery Bank CEO Hylton Kallner framed the work as part of a broader move to integrate banking, protection, rewards and investments into one digital experience.
The comparison with wider enterprise AI spending is what makes the bank’s figure stand out.
PYMNTS Intelligence’s August 2026 Enterprise Benchmark Report found that 90% to 100% of surveyed enterprises were getting some return from AI investments, but only 5% to 10% were already seeing full payback.
At least half of firms in every industry group expected full payback to take five to six years.
PYMNTS presented the case as an outlier against a wider enterprise market in which partial returns are common but full payback remains rare and often takes years.
The reported gains span customer recommendations, fraud controls, credit decisions and service workflows.
The 500% ROI figure comes from the bank and its technology vendors; no independent audit is cited.
