Cursor Tests ₹649 India Plan Before SpaceX Deal Closes
Cursor launched a ₹649-a-month India subscription, using local pricing and UPI support to test paid AI coding adoption before its expected SpaceX acquisition closes, TechCrunch reported.
India is becoming a test of whether an AI coding assistant can localise pricing for a large developer market while keeping the lower-cost plan commercially sustainable.
TechCrunch reported Monday that Cursor introduced Cursor Start, a ₹649-a-month subscription for India that sits below its standard $20-a-month Pro plan.
The package arrives before SpaceX's expected acquisition of Cursor closes and gives the AI coding startup a country-specific tier in one of its largest developer markets.
TechCrunch's interview with Cursor's Asia-Pacific and Japan head Simon Green included the company's ranking of India as its third-largest market, and the GitHub count cited by TechCrunch put the country at more than 27 million developers.
Cursor Start Puts India Pricing Below Pro
Cursor Start is built around lower monthly access rather than the full feature list of Cursor Pro.
The India plan brings Composer 2.5, Grok 4.5, extra capacity beyond the free tier, cloud-agent access, iOS support, MCP tooling, plugins, hooks and skills.
The product boundary is as important as the price.
Green gave TechCrunch a feature split that leaves frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations and the Cursor SDK outside the lower tier.
Start is therefore a capacity upgrade for individual developers rather than a full replacement for the subscription tier used by heavier professional teams.
Payment design also makes the launch specific to India.
The plan is billed in Indian rupees and supports credit cards, debit cards and India's Unified Payments Interface.
Green's interview also placed access controls around the offer, including checks intended to restrict the plan to individual users in India and deter virtual private network access.
India Gives Cursor A Developer-Scale Test
The market case rests on both user growth and developer density.
Green's interview put Indian user growth at more than threefold over the past year, while Cursor already ranks the country as its third-largest market globally.
The lower local price now tests whether free and individual usage can move into paid AI coding capacity without requiring the full Pro plan.
The adoption base is not limited to hobbyist use.
Green's account put current uptake around individual developers, startups and universities, while the enterprise effort remains early.
Banking and large companies were named as opportunity areas as Cursor expands sales coverage, giving the company a path from individual coding seats into organisational accounts if local pricing produces enough paid demand.
The staffing plan described by Green includes a first salesperson in India, another expected leader in Delhi, a government affairs office, and three technical customer-support hires across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
The hiring pattern matches a market-entry push rather than a purely online subscription experiment.
The pricing model also reflects an operating-cost decision.
Green linked the India-specific tier to commercial sustainability because it relies on Cursor's own AI models rather than mainly on third-party frontier models.
Lower subscription prices are easier to defend when external model calls are not the main cost driver.
SpaceX Deal Leaves Expansion Timing Open
The India launch comes after SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal, with the transaction expected to close in Q3.
SpaceX has worked with Cursor since April on a next-generation coding and knowledge-work AI, while Green's interview kept the India pricing plan separate from the deal by placing the work before the acquisition announcement.
Green told TechCrunch that Cursor will operate independently until closing.
The India tier is first a test of local pricing, payment support and developer conversion before any combined SpaceX-Cursor sales channel exists.
SpaceX's Starlink presence in India could lower commercial and operational barriers after the acquisition closes, Green told TechCrunch.
The local-pricing pattern is already wider than one company.
OpenAI and Anthropic have also launched India-specific plans over the past year, and OpenAI previously took a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go subscription from India into more Asian markets.
Cursor Start conversion rates and any expansion timetable beyond India remain unpublished.
